Abstract: Cytochrome c oxidase or complex IV is the terminal enzyme of the aerobic respiratory chain performing the essential process of reducing molecular oxygen to water. The energy resulting from this reaction is exploited to drive proton pumping across the membrane, which in turn contributes to the generation of a proton motive force and the downstream synthesis of ATP.
