Abstract: Within terrestrial ecosystems, the soil C02 efflux is one of the largest carbon flux components. The global efflux of carbon from the soil is estimated between 50 and 75 Gt C year-1 and makes up 20–40 % of the total annual input of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (Houghton and Woodwell 1989; Raich and Schlesinger 1992; Schimel 1995).
