Abstract: Increasing iron bioavailability attenuates hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction in both lowlanders and Sherpas at high altitude. In contrast, the pulmonary vasculature of Andean individuals with chronic mountain sickness (CMS) is resistant to iron administration.
