The article deals with the problem of the existence of the Russian language at the end of the 20th century against the background of socio-cultural and political changes in society. The author identifies three main lexical cycles in the formation of the communicative portrait of the epoch. The change in the appearance of the language is associated with the processes that have received the greatest development in the 20th century: coding and codification; recoding - decodification - new codification, etc. The increased role of the administrative-territorial sub-paradigm of the Russian language in the creation of new speech models is noted. The author emphasizes that the 20th century influenced the change of language sign. The article deals with the problem of the sociolinguistic status of the Russian language in the pre-revolutionary period in the Soviet and post-Soviet times. The author says about the loss of the position of the Russian language at the end of the 20th century. Its role in the trance-ethnic space of post-Soviet Russia is noted.
