Abstract: The heating of primordial gas by the background radiation at cosmological epochs z less than or equal to 150 is considered. The energy of the radiation is transformed into thermal energy of the gas by transitions between the lowest rotational levels of H/sub 2/ molecules, a small admixture of which may be present in the primordial gas. The process raises the temperature of the primordial gas by several tens of degrees. Observational verification of the effect is discussed.
